A funded research summer turned a pre-med hunch into a published paper — and a different career entirely.

Amara arrived at Illinois Wesleyan certain she would be a physician. A funded summer in a faculty lab did not talk her out of medicine so much as widen the question she was asking.

By August she was second author on a paper. By spring she had reframed her entire plan around research. Neither would have happened if the summer had needed to pay rent.
